Dear Doctor

Earlier this evening while hanging out with Brendan and watching the evening news, a commercial for a drug for Restless Leg Syndrome came on.

Brendan watched the commercial raptly. When it was over he said, "Mommy, when your legs can't rest at night in your bed...you can come downstairs and sleep on the couch with me. And we can watch grown up shows. Or kid shows."

I couldn't figure out if he was being sweet or entirely self-serving.

I'll go with sweet.

I made the mistake of sharing with one of my friends my belief that "RLS" is an entirely made-up ailment. He (and his wife) spent the next 25 minutes describing the struggle of overcoming his RLS. I still think it's fake.

Sorry, that story was just too good not to share (in this context). JNH

I totally agree with you. I think it's yet another way for drug makers to make a profit. Hey! Let's invent a disease and make a drug with really nasty side effects that we can use to sucker more money out of people.

Great.

My favorite version of this is when Lilly renamed Prozac Serafem so they could extend their patent and made up some sort of premenstrual anxiety disorder. I forget what they called it. This came straight from someone I know who works for Lilly. Or used to.

Ahh yes Lily. I used to live in Indy, the world headquarters. The smells that came out of that place...yuck!

Now that I re-read this, what are these grown-up shows, anyway?

Tee-hee-hee.
