In an Octopus's Garden

There's a reason I'm up at 4:00 a.m. Again. Blogging.

But, I don't want to think about asthma and inhalers and nebulizers, Albuterol and Pulmicort, or Paul McCartney as we like to call it around here.

I have vegetable gardens on my mind.

I know nothing about gardening really. But, I want to have a little vegetable garden this year. Drought be damned.

Do any of you know anything about gardening? How much sun is necessary (we have a very shady yard)? Is it too late to plant?

I'd love to hear any advice any of you pro gardeners have to offer.

Thanks.

well, i can't give you advice, but i've been thinking myself of an herb garden. i have a great-sized patch, but no idea what herbs do well in a pretty shady area. i keep saying i'm going to research it, but..

Yeah...I tried googling it at 4:00 a.m., but wasn't well-adjusted, i.e. awake enough, to process the bits I found.

I really just want someone with knowledge and experience to tell me what to do.

I also need to find someone with a tiller who is willing to break up the ground for me.

I think it would be so wonderful to dig in the dirt with the boys and grow some of our own food.

I'd love to grow peppers and tomatoes, carrots, peas, cucumbers, cantaloupes, and squash. Plus herbs. I already have rosemary and sage and spearmint. I'd love to add basil and chives and thyme. I use those a lot.

Oh to dream!

so, you may want to check this blog, http://yeahbutts.blogspot.com/

it's a florida mom who blogs often about gardening with her young son! i was going to send it to you earlier, but as it's entitled "They Live in the Woods" i couldn't remember the web address. came home for lunch, and VOILA!

Well, I don't know if this would interest you or not, but my parents bought a kit for growing tomatoes. It comes with the seeds, the dirt, the box that has an interesting way of watering and the lines for the vines to grow up on. It seems to be working without too much trouble. Tomatoes like some shade. We like to grow the Creole Tomatoes - oh YUM! It's not too late to plant them (I'm from the south), if that helps.

1) purchase small plants at a reputable nursery

2) ask them for advice

3) I don't know about GA, but in NC you can have your soil tested by the AG group. They test it (for free, I believe) and let you know not only what will grow best, but also what you'd need to add to optimize your garden.

Good luck!

I must admit, I'm not much of a gardener. I've successfully planted (and transplanted) a number of trees and woody ornamentals–I love me some loropetalum–over the years, but herbs and veggies have been hit or miss.

At about this time last year, however, we let Nathan pick out some items for a (rather large) container garden. He planted a tomato plant and three peppers. The tomato plant hit the wall around August. The peppers kept on going well into fall.

Lettuce is supposed to be easy to grow.

Anyway, if you find someone knowledgeable, you should be able to figure out a nice little shady garden. Aside from pumpkins/gourds, I think we're past the point of starting from seeds this year.
