The Scientist

What did you dream of being when you were a child? Did you give up that dream or is it still in your heart and head somewhere? If so, are you pursuing it in some way?

I'm thinking about all of this, because, as you probably have figured out by now, I'm still trying to figure out how to make my dreams happen. Some I have achieved, but thankfully, I still have others that I'm working on.

And now, my son is old enough to start telling me about some of his dreams. It's wonderful to get a peek inside that head and hear what he thinks about, to see some of the places his imagination carries him....

Brendan has been saying recently that he wants to be a scientist. And a vegetarian. Sometimes he gets confused. He told me last week that scientists don't eat meat. We fixed that one pretty quickly. Still, he wants to be a non-carnivorous scientist. I'm good with that.

On Sunday, as we were driving home from his soccer game, he told me he wants to have his own TV network that broadcasts all his favorite shows. It will also broadcast The Brendan Show. As he described it, it sounds a lot like Late Night with Conan O'Brien, my favorite late-night chat show. He said that he would be on the show and he'd have his friends on and they'd do funny tricks and they'd talk to other people about what they did and what they like. He's never watched a show like that at home, although I guess he could have seen something similar at his grandmother's. I'm not entirely sure where he came up with the idea.

Later that night as I was tucking him in, he told me that he would also like to have his own laboratory so that he could conduct experiments and make potions and he wants to be a TV actor. He'd also like to have all his toys talk so they can be his friends. And he wants a goldfish.

Big dreams.

I support them all. Except for the talking toys.

It's noisy enough in this house.

What a sweet kid. I loved hearing about his dreams, too. I'll be back to read your blog often.

I also want to thank you for the wonderful comment you left on my blog. It really lifted me up in a very trying time.

Reason #724907 why kids are amazing and wonderful. When she was little, my sister wanted to be a veterinarian by day and pump gas at night. (She always wanted to hold the gas pump, but my parents would never let her.) I wanted to be a reporter and a fashion designer (at the same time, of course). I can't wait to see what my niece wants to be!

Jen, you are so very right! And I think you've hit the essence of what is truly great about kids: there is no judgment with them...no sense of "I'm better than you because I'm a doctor and you're a gas station attendant."

And, if Danica McKellar can be an actor and a mathematician, Brendan could certainly be an actor and scientist if he chooses.

I wanted to be a ballerina and teacher. I can't dance to save my soul and I think I missed my calling as a teacher. Lol.

I too wanted to be a ballerina, then a teacher! Well, English professor. I had a great-aunt who was a legendary teacher in Darlington County, SC, who wanted me to be a teacher. I used to say (back when I was a school lawyer) that I was honoring her wish by representing school districts and working so closely with teachers. Right now I fantasize about being a bartender at a beachfront bar somewhere in the Caribbean, so that I could sunbathe all day and leave my work at work (rather than ALWAYS feeling I should bill more hours). The grass is always greener, right?

I wanted to be a actor, doctor who lived in two countries and had 3-5 children.

It's so wonderful how children are just fine with anything that suits their fancy at the moment. They are too young to be jaded!

Some days I yearn for the innocence again.

I wanted to be a writer and a truck driver. Together.

Nooze has recently said that she wants to be a 'massager' and a vegetarian veterinarian. And a school teacher.

God bless young Brendan.

I wanted to be a umpire for Major League Baseball. Later, I wanted to be a writer. Which, in a sense, I am.

Kudos on the Danica ("Winnie Cooper") McKellar reference. I always felt she was too good for Freddy "'the Beetle' Barnes" Savage.

She should have been chilling with Paul!

Jeremy, all I can say is "Hells Yeah!"

No, I think I might have a girl crush on Danica McKellar! She's so smart. And beautiful. And she seems very nice, to boot. Of course, when I thought smart and talented, she was the first person to come to mind.

Except, of course, Brendan's dad (UI guru by day, dirty rock boy by night). But, I wanted a more widely recognized and female role model as my example.
